Transport Chair vs Standard Wheelchair: What's the Difference?
They look alike at a glance, but a transport chair and a standard wheelchair are built for two different situations. Renting the right one comes down to a single question: will the person in the chair ever want to move themselves, or will someone always be pushing?
The standard wheelchair: self-propelling
A standard wheelchair has large rear wheels with hand rims, which means the person sitting in it can push themselves along independently, as well as being pushed by someone else. That independence is the whole point. The trade-off is that it is a bit heavier and bulkier because of those big wheels. Our standard wheelchair has a 19-inch seat and supports up to 275 pounds, a comfortable fit for most adults.
The transport chair: lighter, companion-pushed
A transport chair has four small wheels and no hand rims, so it is always pushed by a companion. In exchange it is noticeably lighter, folds more compactly, and lifts into a car trunk with ease. It is ideal when there will always be a family member or caregiver along, and when easy transport matters, think airport terminals, appointments, museums and sightseeing where someone is happy to push.
Which should you rent?
If the person wants to be able to move themselves at least some of the time, rent the standard wheelchair. If someone will always be pushing and you want the lightest, most portable option, rent the transport chair. Many families renting for a visiting parent choose the transport chair for its convenience; those renting for more independence choose the standard. Not sure? Ask us and we will help you decide.
